Imagine a team as a car on a road. Are they accelerating or braking? This signal looks at recent match results and gives extra weight to the most recent games. A team that lost three early matches but just won two is treated as "improving" because the newest results count roughly 2.5 times more than the oldest. It answers a simple question: right now, is this team on the way up or the way down?
Why It Matters
Form measures direction of momentum, not just win totals. A team losing recent matches after winning earlier is in decline, while a team now winning after early losses shows improvement. The recency weighting captures this trajectory, which often predicts future performance better than raw results.
How It's Calculated
Data Sources
Recent match results (wins, draws, losses) from the current season only. Each result carries a competition modifier — league matches count fully, while cup matches are weighted lower (0.6–0.9).
Key Formula
Each result is scored as a win, draw, or loss, with recent matches counting roughly two and a half times more than the oldest ones. League matches count fully, while cup matches are given less weight since squads and tactics often differ. The system averages all these weighted results to produce an overall form score for each team.
Normalization
The two teams’ form scores are compared directly. A big gap means one team is clearly in better form than the other. A supplementary trend check splits results into an older half and a newer half to classify momentum as improving, stable, or declining.
Confidence Impact
Requires at least 3 matches per team for a directional signal. Fewer than 5 matches adds significant uncertainty (+0.2). Data quality dimensions (completeness and freshness) each add further penalties — stale or incomplete data can push uncertainty above 0.7. With zero results for either team, uncertainty reaches 0.95 and the signal becomes essentially neutral.
