Frequently Asked Questions About Match Signals
What are football analysis signals?
Football analysis signals are data-driven metrics that quantify different aspects of a football match. xGoal uses 29 signals across three categories (offense, defense, context) plus H2H deep-dive signals and a meta-signal to build a complete pre-match picture. Each signal is calculated from professional data sources and combined using calibrated weights to produce probability ranges.
How many signals does xGoal use?
xGoal uses 29 professional signals: 8 offense signals (form, chance quality, conversion efficiency, possession efficiency, crossing quality, creativity, counter attack, set piece threat), 8 defense signals (defensive reliability, pressing intensity, goalkeeper, tackle efficiency, aerial dominance, aerial defense, error-prone analysis, discipline risk), 8 context signals (venue, availability, schedule, league position, weather impact, referee tendency, manager effect, H2H record), 5 H2H deep-dive signals (tactical, offensive, defensive, physical patterns), and 1 meta-signal (uncertainty).
How are signals combined into match insights?
Each signal is calculated independently and assigned a calibrated weight based on historical predictive accuracy. The weighted signals are combined to produce probability ranges (e.g. "Home win: 35-45%") rather than single-point predictions. When data is missing or stale, the affected signal is degraded and probability ranges widen to reflect the increased uncertainty.
Which signals are most important for match analysis?
No single signal dominates. The most predictive signals vary by league: pressing intensity is crucial in the Bundesliga, defensive reliability matters most in Serie A, and possession efficiency is key in La Liga. xGoal uses all 29 signals together because multi-signal analysis outperforms any individual metric.
