Defensive Reliability measures team defending quality based on Expected Goals Against (xGA), which represents the quality of chances allowed to opponents. Lower xGA indicates better defensive organization, positioning, and pressing.

In a Nutshell

How hard is it to score against this team? Imagine two walls — one is thick and barely lets anything through, the other is full of holes. This signal measures how many dangerous chances a team allows opponents to create, independent of whether the goalkeeper makes spectacular saves. A team that consistently limits opponents to low-quality chances from difficult angles is defensively reliable. A team that gives away clear-cut opportunities is vulnerable, even if results have not caught up yet.

Why It Matters

Elite defending limits high-quality chances, forcing opponents into difficult shots. A team allowing 0.8 xGA per match is extremely difficult to score against, regardless of actual goals conceded. Conversely, a team allowing 1.7+ xGA is defensively vulnerable and will likely concede multiple goals over time.

How It's Calculated

Data Sources

Expected Goals Against (xGA) per match from sports analytics providers, measuring the quality of chances conceded. Supplemented by clean sheet rate (percentage of matches without conceding). When xGA data is unavailable, actual goals conceded per match is used as a fallback (marked as degraded quality).

Key Formula

Mostly based on the quality of chances a team allows opponents to create, with a smaller contribution from how often they keep clean sheets. When multiple seasons of data are available, more recent seasons carry greater weight. The system anchors to well-established benchmarks: allowing very few dangerous chances is elite, while allowing many is poor.

Normalization

Both the chance quality conceded and the clean sheet rate are compared against league-wide standards. The two teams’ combined scores are then compared to determine which defence is stronger.

Confidence Impact

Requires at least 5 matches per team for reasonable confidence. Fewer than 5 matches adds +0.40 uncertainty; 5-9 matches adds +0.25. Missing xGA data (falling back to goals conceded) adds +0.40. Single-season analysis adds +0.10 compared to multi-season. With no defensive data at all, uncertainty reaches 0.95.

Reality: Clean sheets contribute only 20% of the signal. A team might keep clean sheets against weak opponents while allowing high xGA. The xGA metric at 80% weight captures the true quality of defending regardless of the final score.

Reality: This signal measures defensive quality, not style. An attacking team that presses high and recovers the ball quickly can have excellent defensive reliability (low xGA) while still playing expansive football.
