Territorial control measures a team's ability to dominate possession and control the flow of play. Based primarily on average possession percentage over recent matches, it indicates which team typically controls the ball and dictates tempo.

Which team dominates the pitch? When one team has the ball most of the time, pushes the play into the opponent’s half, and completes more passes accurately, they are controlling the territory. This signal combines possession percentage, dangerous attacks (attacks that reach the goal area), and passing accuracy to paint a picture of which team typically dictates where the match is played. A team that controls territory forces the opponent to defend and creates more opportunities.

Why It Matters

Teams with strong territorial control often create more chances, limit opponent opportunities, and control match tempo. High possession doesn't guarantee wins, but it correlates with creating better chances and reducing defensive pressure. When combined with chance quality metrics, it reveals whether possession translates into genuine scoring threats.

How It's Calculated

Data Sources

Match statistics from the last 5 league matches per team: possession percentage, dangerous attacks, total attacks, and pass accuracy (accurate passes / total passes). League-only matches are used; cups and friendlies are excluded to avoid tactical distortion from squad rotation.

Key Formula

Combines three measures: possession share (the biggest factor), how many dangerous attacks reach the goal area, and how accurately the team passes. When fewer than eight matches are available, the system assumes the team is closer to average until more data confirms otherwise.

Normalization

Each measure is compared against the league-wide range, from the lowest-performing to the highest-performing teams. A small adjustment removes the natural tendency for home teams to have slightly more possession, so the signal reflects true ability rather than venue effects.

Confidence Impact

If either team lacks any territorial data, the signal is excluded entirely. With minimal data (possession only), uncertainty increases by +0.40. Small sample sizes below the 5-match window add a scaled penalty. Data staleness adds +0.05 for 7-14 days, +0.10 for 14-30 days, and up to +0.30 for very old data. Multi-season aggregated data has a 0.30 base uncertainty capped at 0.70.

Reality: The dangerous attacks component (30% weight) rewards teams that create threatening situations regardless of possession share. A direct team with 40% possession but 14 dangerous attacks per match can score above average on the composite.

Myth: "Home teams always look better on territorial control"

Reality: The signal applies a venue adjustment: home scores are divided by 1.05 and away by 0.95. This neutralises the ~52% vs ~48% home-away possession split, so the signal reflects true territorial ability rather than venue effects.
