Key Formula

Combines league position (the bigger factor) with points per game (a smaller but important factor). Position is adjusted for league size so that being near the top of an 18-team league is treated fairly against being near the top of a 20-team league. Points per game fills in the gap that raw position misses, such as when a team has games in hand.

Normalization

The combined score is used to classify the gap between teams: a clear advantage (large position gap or big points-per-game difference), a notable gap, closely matched, or a disadvantage. This classification makes the signal easy to interpret at a glance.

Confidence Impact

Uncertainty depends entirely on matches played by the less-sampled team. Below 3 matches: 0.90 uncertainty. 3-4 matches: 0.80. 5-7: 0.65. 8-9: 0.50. 10-14: 0.40. 15+: 0.30 (the floor). League position is considered stable only after 10+ matches, reflecting research by Goddard (2005) on when standings become predictive.
