Possession Efficiency in Football

Possession Efficiency measures how effectively teams convert possession into scoring chances. Combines Expected Possession Value (EPV), which is xG generated per unit of possession, with Shot Efficiency (percentage of shots on target).

In a Nutshell

Having the ball is not the same as doing something useful with it. Some teams hold 70% possession but create barely any chances — that is "sterile possession." Other teams hold just 35% but create dangerous attacks every time they get the ball. This signal measures how efficiently a team converts their share of possession into goal-scoring opportunities and on-target shots. It answers: when this team has the ball, how dangerous are they?

Why It Matters

Research shows possession percentage alone has no significant correlation with match outcomes, but EPV is highly predictive (65.6% accuracy). This signal identifies teams that maximize goal-scoring opportunities from limited possession (counter-attacking styles) versus teams with sterile possession that fail to create quality chances.

How It's Calculated

Data Sources

Expected Goals (xG), possession percentage, and shot statistics (total shots, shots on target) from match data providers. Data is pre-aggregated across seasons with temporal weighting to prioritise recent performance.

Key Formula

Combines two measures: how much danger a team creates relative to how much possession they have, and what proportion of their shots actually hit the target. The danger-per-possession measure carries slightly more weight because it better predicts match outcomes.

Normalization

Teams are compared against the typical range seen across all leagues, so the system can tell whether a team is genuinely above or below average at converting possession into danger. A team near the top of the range is elite; near the bottom is wasteful.

Confidence Impact

Uncertainty scales with sample size: the penalty is 0.40 / √(matches), so 4 matches gives +0.20 uncertainty while 16 matches gives +0.10. Missing xG data adds +0.30 because the primary EPV metric cannot be calculated properly. Missing shot data adds +0.15. Single-season analysis adds +0.05. With no data at all, uncertainty reaches 0.95.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal

Premier League — Dec 2025

Aston Villa
Slight edge
Signal indicated moderate home advantage
Arsenal
Competitive
Close but slightly behind on this metric

What happened: The signal leaned slightly toward Villa, but Arsenal's strengths in other signals offset this. This illustrates why no single signal tells the full story — context from all signals matters.

Common Misconceptions

Myth: "More possession means more efficient possession"

Reality: Possession percentage has no significant correlation with match outcomes. EPV (xG per possession unit) is the critical metric, with 65.6% predictive accuracy. A team with 35% possession creating 1.8 xG is more efficient than a team with 70% creating 0.6 xG.

Myth: "Shot volume equals shot efficiency"

Reality: Taking 20 shots with only 3 on target (15% efficiency) is worse than taking 8 shots with 5 on target (62.5% efficiency). This signal measures the proportion of shots that threaten the goal, not how many times a team shoots.

Myth: "Counter-attacking teams cannot score highly on this signal"

Reality: Counter-attacking teams often score very highly because they maximise the danger created from limited possession. Low possession with high xG produces an elite EPV score.

What This Signal Cannot Tell You

  • No single signal determines match outcome
  • All signals carry uncertainty that widens probability ranges
  • Data freshness affects confidence in the assessment
  • Context matters: signals interact with each other and with match circumstances
