This signal looks at the referee assigned to the match and checks two things: how strict they are in general, and how each team has done when this specific referee was in charge before. If an aggressive team gets a strict referee, expect more fouls and cards. If a clean team gets a lenient referee, the match should flow more freely.

Why It Matters

Referee assignment can meaningfully influence match dynamics. A strict referee disrupts high-tempo, physical teams more than technical sides. Teams with poor disciplinary records face greater risk of cards, suspensions, and free kicks in dangerous areas. Referee career data: yellow cards, red cards, fouls called, and penalties awarded per match across all officiated matches. Team-specific records (W-D-L) and cards received under this referee. Team aggression metrics from recent matches.

Key Formula

Mainly driven by a "friction score" that combines how aggressive each team plays with how strict the assigned referee is. An aggressive team paired with a strict referee faces more expected disruption than a clean team with a lenient one. Card patterns under this specific referee provide secondary confirmation. Past win-loss records against this referee are shown for context but do not drive the signal, since with small samples they mostly reflect team quality rather than referee influence.

Normalization

The referee is classified into tiers from lenient to heavy-handed based on their career card averages. Each team’s friction score reflects how their style interacts with that specific referee’s tendencies.

Confidence Impact

Referee must have officiated at least 10 matches for reliable tendency classification. Team-specific records under a referee require at least 3 matches to be meaningful (shown dimmed below 3). Fewer than 3 team-specific matches triggers a "limited data" warning.
